Why Running is for everyone!

In my experience as both a runner, a physiotherapist and a run coach I often hear "Oh, I wish I could run, but I just wasn't made for it!" or "I've tried running, but I could never quite get past a couple of kms before I had to stop, my shins got too sore!"....and the list goes on.

So why am I saying that Running can be for anyone and everyone?

Running is one of the fastest growing sports for individuals all around the globe because it is relatively cheap, easily accessible and great for fitness. But unfortunately, it is also something a lot of people feel they are unable to sustain. I am here to say, that achieving sustainable running and joy in running is not impossible and it is also something that can be started from any age. Ever seen runners in their 80's? They exist! And I want to be them when I grow up!

There is approximately 3.5 million Australians participating in athletics and running annually (according to Ausplay Data https://www.clearinghouseforsport.gov.au/research/ausplay/results) and over 400000 people considering taking it up as a sport/physical activity. Sadly, Ausplay data also determined that people stopped running with reasons such as "not good enough", "fear of injury", "poor health or injury" or "increasing age/too old".

Are you one of those people considering taking it up? What is stopping you?

If you simply don't know where to start, consider a running coach. Yes we help people learn to run and here at Epic Strides, we approach it in a gradual sustainable way to help minimize injury risk and provide you with the tools to overcome the hurdles that have stopped you in the past.

Is it that you enjoy running but feel aimless in how to approach your running to build up your distances? Start with small, SMART goals and keep yourself accountable by putting strategies in place to get you out the door. Put those shoes/kit in your car so that you get changed before you even leave work! For more info on SMART goals, check out our reel on Instagram @epicstrides.coaching

Is it more that you have tried running in the past and you ended up injured? The guidance of a coach and physiotherapist can be greatly beneficial because not only do we understand how to improve your running, but we also have an in-depth understanding of what the biggest risk factors are for running related injuries. Here at Epic Strides we are lucky enough to have both and can help you identify where you may have mis-stepped in the past and reduce your risk of it happening again. Education is important and highly valued with our Epic Strides Team.

Is it that you feel your are too old to continue or worried that your increasing age might impact on your running?

While it can be true that some factors will change with age, it is also true that sometimes a simple tweak in running training, strength training and approaches can help keep you running for longer! Ask us more today!

Why is running for everyone? With the right support, education and knowledge, Running can be accessible to anyone, regardless of their location, gender, age, wealth and experience. You don't need to spend a lot to run. You don't even need much equipment. But having someone to support and educate you in the process can be invaluable if you are struggling to get started. Contact us today if you wish to learn more about how Epic Strides may be able to help you start running!

*It is recommended to seek advice from your treating health professional before taking up new activities. The information provided is general in nature and for educational purposes only.
